Boston Bruins Top Defenseman Emerges As Atlantic Division Rivals Top Trade Candidate Before Trade Deadline
The Boston Bruins could end up losing defenseman Brandon Carlo at the trade deadline, should the team miss the playoffs.
The Boston Bruins rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs are in the hunt for a right-shot defenseman according to NHL Insider Chris Johnston.
The Maple Leafs are 2nd in the Atlantic Division and are looking to bolster their defensive core, with the team missing Jani Hakanpa in the lineup.
While the team's defense has continued to improve as time goes on, they're still on the look for help.
Johnston noted that while the team has improved defensively, they "still have some question marks" and could use another physical, shutdown presence.
One of those options could be the Bruins' own, Brandon Carlo.
However, since the team is pressed tight against the cap, they'll have to find someone who could fit. At the moment they only have $2.2 million in cap space.
While Carlo is an expensive option for the Maple Leafs if they could figure out the greasy details of a trade it could work out.
If the Bruins end up retooling the lineup, they could eat some salary and include a third team to make the deal more palatable for the Leafs.
This season with the Bruins he's served as a shutdown defenseman, with limited offensive potential.
He's played 55 games and scored 9 points (1 G, 8 A), which is fine as the team is looking for a defenseman who can clog passing lanes, and suffocate star players in the offensive zone.
While it may be a difficult premise to stomach, the Maple Leafs could put out feelers to GM Don Sweeney and the Bruins to get an idea of the cost.
