The New York Islanders shocked the hockey world last summer when they relieved Barry Trotz of his head coaching duties after disappointingly missing the postseason.

However, recent reports are that Trotz will be returning to the NHL, but this time in a front office role. As he's expected to take over for longtime Predators GM David Poile.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman broke the news:

''Big breaking story out of Nashville: after 26 years as the Predators' architect the most consistent presence in franchise history David Poile is retiring from President of Hockey Operations & GM position, effective June 30. Expectation is he will remain in a consulting role.''

'Barry Trotz is believed to be Poile's successor. Starting work immediatelyalthough not officially the GM until June 30.''

Trotz was originally hired by Poile as the first head coach of the Predators and he stayed behind the bench for 15 seasons. He left Nashville after the 2013-14 season with a record of 557-479-60-100.

He then moved on to the Washington Capitals where he spent three seasons, winning the Stanley Cup in 2018. Trotz's last stop was, of course, with the Islanders from 2018 to 2022.

Poile has been the general manager in Nashville since they officially joined the NHL in 1997. The Toronto native has the most wins by a GM in league history with 1,519 currently.

Poile also became the first GM to have 3,000 NHL games under his belt. Sadly, he was never able to capture the Stanley Cup.
