The Boston Bruins may have to retool the lineup, should they miss the Stanley Cup playoffs. One trade piece they could use is Brad Marchand, who could find a home with the Edmonton Oilers.
With the Edmonton Oilers expected to be Stanley Cup contenders once again in 2025, they'll need to bolster their lineup.
At the moment, they're fourth in the NHL with a record of 32-16-4 and could find themselves buyers. They've already claimed
Kasperi Kapanen off of waivers and signed John Klingberg.
One more player who could catch GM Stan Bowman's eyes is the Bruins Captain Brad Marchand.
The team will likely have to retool the lineup, as they have a record of 26-22-6, and 6th in the Atlantic Division.
«Acquiring Marchand at the deadline would be something close to a perfect fit for the Oilers. If he does become available, Bowman and Edmonton should be aggressive in pursuing Marchand,» Allan Mitchell recently wrote in The Athletic (from 'Why the Oilers and Bruins make great trade partners ahead of 2025 deadline,' The Athletic, 01/29/25).
While the 32 Thoughts Podcast's Elliotte Friedman feels that despite a no-trade clause the Bruins could legitimately move Marchand.
«If Boston takes on water, I'm really going to be curious to see where this goes,» Friedman said. «There was a time in this year, where I didn't think there was a chance that Marchand was going to be out. And now, I think it's not as certain, depending on what happens here.»
The Oilers would have to pay an expensive price, for an elite winger such as Marchand.
They would have to consider trading their 2026 1st-round pick, including their prospect Matt Savoie who they acquired for
Ryan McLeod from the Oilers.
Savoie has proven himself to be an excellent prospect this season scoring 31 points (12 G, 19 A) in 40 games.
However, if the Oilers want to make it to the players they'll once again have to unload their prospect pool to stay relevant come April.
