The Hurricanes have officially given up on trying to re-sign star forward Jake Guentzel and have traded his signing rights away to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In return the Carolina Hurricanes have acquired a third round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have less than 24 hours to try and get a deal done with Jake Guentzel before he can officially become a free agent and explore signing options with other teams.
There were a lot of rumours about the Boston Bruins being in on Jake Guentzel if he were to hit the free market and this could still happen, but the Lightning probably wouldn't have made the trade if they didn't think they would be able to sign him.
It was reported that Jake Guentzel wanted an 8-year contract at $8 million and reportedly the Hurricanes didn't reach that until this week, and Guentzel has decided that he can do better on the open market.
The Lightning made room for Guentzel yesterday during day 2 of the Draft where we say them trade Tanner Jeannot and Mikhail Sergachev.
