Erik Karlsson's seismic trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins marked a significant shift in the NHL trade landscape. However, the spotlight now pivots toward the Calgary Flames and their defenseman, Noah Hanifin.

During the early days of summer, Hanifin explicitly communicated his reluctance to ink a fresh contract with the Flames. The impending unrestricted free agency next summer amplified his decision. Adding another layer to the equation, Hannifin expressed interest in a potential trade to an American team.

Amidst the flurry of free agents clamoring for new contracts, observers anticipated that the Flames would heed Hanifin's request. Yet, as time ticks on, the anticipated move has yet to materialize. However, trade rumblings are now on the rise.

Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News highlights three teams fervently pursuing Hanifin's services. He writes,

"The Sabres, Red Wings, and Predators have ample cap space to absorb Hanifin's cap hit. Their reservoir of promising young talents and draft picks could entice the Flames."

Intriguingly, Hanifin's name has also been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he could elevate the defensive corps of almost any team.

With a fresh Head Coach and General Manager at the helm, the upcoming season for the Flames takes on a captivating hue. Negotiating the terrain of impending free agents while charting the course ahead will undoubtedly be a narrative to watch.
