Maple Leafs' Captain Shares Emotional Words after Teammate's Tragic Passing
The news about a young prospect's passing has hit the Toronto Maple Leafs hard. Earlier today, they announced that Rodion Amirov, who was their 15th overall pick in 2020, has passed away after battling a brain tumor for two years. The team's captain, John Tavares, has shared his reaction.
John Tavares took to Twitter to express his feelings on behalf of the team. He said,
"It's incredibly hard to comprehend the loss of Rodion. His smile and joy for life & hockey was infectious. My teammates & I are grateful for our time spent with him & forever inspired by his courageous fight. Condolences to his loved ones. We'll miss him dearly. #RodionForever - John Tavares
Although Rodion Amirov didn't actually play for the Leafs, he did attend their rookie and training camps before going back to his home country to play in the KHL. He seemed to have a promising NHL career ahead of him before his illness was discovered. The KHL, where he played 70 games in three seasons, paid tribute to him with a moment of silence after a pre-season game.
Amirov had traveled to different countries seeking treatment for his illness, and there were times when it seemed he was getting better. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.
