Boston Bruins captain made a surprising admission after breaking his scoreless drought yesterday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Brad Marchand almost scored his first goal of the season on an empty net, but Marchand got tied up and went offside before he could get the shot off.

The Toronto Maple Leafs would score the tying goal late in the third period, to force overtime, giving Marchand another opportunity to score his first of the season that he would not miss.

Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews had a terrible turnover in the defensive zone, where he turned it over to David Pastrnak, Pastrnak fed the puck to Marchand where he was originally robbed by Anthony Stolarz, but Marchand found the loose puck and buried it to give the Bruins the 4-3 comeback win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in TD Garden.

Marchand after finally scoring his first goal of the 2024-25 season took sole possession of third place in franchise history for all-time game winning goals.

«I was hoping it was going to happen on the empty-netter, I got to be honest,» Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery said. «You could tell how happy the bench was when we scored that goal. He's our leader, he's someone that embodies what it is to be a Bruin - the right way. The way he carries himself on the ice, off the ice, everything.»

Marchand stated that he could feel the weight of being goalless, and it got heavier as each game went by. This was the longest stretch without a goal to start a season for the captain since his first year with the Boston Bruins in 2010-11.

«Yeah it is,» Marchand said when asked if it felt like he got the monkey off his back. «I've been through many different stretches in my career good and bad. You got to stay even-keeled. I wasn't getting too caught up in it. But it is nice to get that one out of the way, for sure.»

Not only did Brad Marchand need this, but the Boston Bruins needed this as well ending a three-game losing streak.
