Criticism has mounted following the recent signing of former NHLer Kenny Agostino by Swedish club Skelleftea AIK, owing to his stint in Russia over the past couple of seasons.

In response to the backlash from fans, partners, and various quarters, the SHL team swiftly opted to terminate Agostino's contract. The club issued the following translated statements:

Note: the following quotes were translated from Swedish

"For Skelleftea AIK, the question of his attempt to end his contract with the Russian club before last season has been important. New information in the media and from other sources changes our position. We therefore choose to break the contract,"
shared General Manager Erik Forssell.

Club director Asa Andersson further emphasized,

"We have had many contacts with partners, members, supporters, and others with black and yellow hearts in recent days. People's love for and commitment to the club is the most important thing we have. We continue forward together and for the good of Skelleftea AIK."

Agostino, hailing from Morristown, New Jersey, reportedly attempted to exit his KHL contract on multiple occasions, citing Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He even received an offer from an SHL team but opted to remain with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod due to higher earnings.

As Agostino's situation unfolds, his future remains uncertain. Nevertheless, given his experience and skillset, it's likely that he'll secure a new team for the upcoming 2023-24 season without much delay.
