The Boston Bruins have to make a decision on what to do with the current roster. It seems unlikely the makeup of this Bruins squad will make the playoffs in 2025.

The Boston Bruins and GM Don Sweeney will have to put their heads down and look into what ails the team.

They're 6th in the Atlantic Division, and look nothing like the team that won a Presidents Trophy under Head Coach Jim Montgomery.

While they have found streaks of success lately, they can't seem to dig themselves out of the hole they're in.

The team is keeping their eyes open on what's available and finding a way to improve according to Sweeney.

"Well, it's been a little unique for us this year, getting out of the gate not as fast as we would like. We're in the middle of things," Sweeney said, as transcribed by WEEI's Scott McLaughlin. "It's a tough exercise to sort of play both sides of the street, but that's almost every year what a general manager is required to do, and test what's out there, what's available and how you can improve, hopefully. We have some areas we would like to, but we have to keep an eye.

Who Could Sweeeney Move

That could mean trading some of their top talent. Of those named are forwards Trent Frederic, Morgan Geekie, and Brad Marchand.

All three could fetch ideal assets to retool the lineup, or at least find an upgrade on the ice.

Morgan Geekie scored a career-high 39 points last season, and earns $2 million AAV. As an RFA he could give yield some value which the team could work with to upgrade the ranks.

While Trent Frederic is a pending UFA, and there's been no word of an extension with the Bruins at the moment.

Frederic would be an excellent addition to a contenders roster, as a depth goal-scorer. He posted a career-high 40 points in 2023-2024 and has an affordable cap hit of $2.3 million.

While keeping Brandon Carlo around is ideal, the Maple Leafs were said to be one team interested in the shutdown defenseman.

GMs across the league have paid a premium for right-shot defensemen, and what better way to find value than through Carlo?

The Bruins haven't yet decided what to do with their younger talent, but GM Don Sweeney will have to decide soon as they could miss the playoffs for the first-time since 2016.
