The Reason Hampus Lindholm Was Placed On Long-Term Injury Rserved Was Just Revealed And It's Surprising
The Boston Bruins have made an announcement regarding defenseman Hampus Lindholm's status today. The defenseman was placed on LTIR today.
The news for the Boston Bruins blue line is concerning, as they are missing defenseman Hampus Lindholm, and Charlie McAvoy both of their top blueliners.
While McAvoy was placed on IR, the Bruins have had to place Lindholm on LTIR as he continues to recover from his injury.
The news of his placement on the long-term injured reserve caused a few fans to panic, as they were unsure of how this affected the Bruins lineup.
Lindholm will miss his 29th straight game versus Tampa Bay on Tuesday, and landing on LTIR won't impact his recovery timeline.
He has been skating, but it remains unclear when he will be ready to return to the lineup. Boston recalled Michael Callahan in a corresponding move because Charlie McAvoy (undisclosed) landed on the IR list. While the Bruins have recalled Michael Callahan, this is an instance of GM Don Sweeney and the team preserving their cap space.
The LTIR has been a favorite way to manage some superstar's injuries for some teams and to keep their hit off of the books until the post-season rolls around.
But it's typically, not something Sweeney and the Bruins have to resort to.
The move was used to speed along Lindholm's return to the lineup when he is cleared.
Let's work backwards. Moving Lindholm to LTIR may seem alarming at first glance, but it's not. The move is retroactive to Nov. 12, so Lindholm can still be activated whenever he is ready to return from his knee injury.
Lindholm has been skating on his own, and there has not been any setback. There is still no timetable for his return, but the next step will be practicing with the team.
In the purest sense of the term, LTIR is a cap management tool, which allows the team to maximize the lineup, while saving money to call up AHLers, and depth players from the minors should they need to do so.
