The Boston Bruins have made a surprising transaction today by placing a defenseman on the waiver wire.

Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the Boston Bruins have placed defenseman Ian Mitchell on the waiver wire making him free for any of the other 31 NHL teams avaliable to claim him.

Smallman clears. Mitchell (BOS) on waivers

Earlier this month the Boston Bruins placed goaltender Jiri Patera on waivers after the Boston Bruins signed Jeremy Swayman to a 8-year, $8 million deal, and the Vancouver Canucks ended up claiming Jiri Patera off of waivers.

Ian Mitchell was acquired by the Boston Bruins when the Boston Bruins traded Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno's signing rights to the Chicago Blackhawks in the off-season of the 2022-23 season.

After sending Taylor Hall, and Nick Foligno to the Chicago Blackhawks, the Boston Bruins would acquire the signing rights to restricted free agent Ian Mitchell, and Alex Regula.

Full trade, per sources:

To #NHLBruins: Rights to RFAs Ian Mitchell and Alec Regula.

To #Blackhawks: Taylor Hall, rights to UFA Nick Foligno.

No salary retained by Boston, this represents a pure salary dump to clear $6 million off Bruins' books.

Both players have spent most of their time with the Boston Bruins organization in Providence, but the Bruins are hopeful no teams end up claiming Mitchell off of waivers.
