Last night, Gatineau Olympiques defenseman Justin Blais had a frightening fall during a scuffle, hitting his head hard on the ice. The impact led to convulsions, prompting medical staff and trainers to rush to his side. Thankfully, Blais was conscious as he was taken off the ice on a stretcher, according to QMJHL reporter Mikael Lalancette.
The Olympiques also confirmed that Blais was awake and alert on his way to the hospital, where he'll be monitored and evaluated. We'll be watching for further updates from the team, but given how intense the situation looked, it may take a few days before we know more. Here's hoping Blais makes a full and speedy recovery without any lasting issues.
Unfortunately, Blais wasn't the only player with a head injury that night. New York Islanders defenseman and former Boston Bruins, Mike Reilly also took a hard hit to the head, nearly needing a stretcher himself.
Both seem to be in stable condition, but head injuries are no small matter. Concussions, even mild ones, can have lasting effects, and hockey players in particular face a higher risk of long-term issues like CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a condition linked to repeated head trauma.
For now, all we can do is hope for the best for both players, and trust they'll have the support and care they need for a full recovery.
Have you ever witnessed someone being stretchered off of the ice during a hockey game?
