Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau spent significant time together as teammates in Calgary.

The two had played 569 games(StatMuse) together in Calgary, and weren't only teammates, but "best friends".

That's why this tragedy is all so heartbreaking:

The two had an goal of continuing their friendship in Columbus, and with that raise their kids together, obviously to grow to be friends as well.

Monahan and Gaudreau had a deep bond, which has been severed thanks to a selfish, drunk driver.

«Johnny's one of my best friends,» Monahan said. «To come back and be able to play with him again is pretty cool.»

When asked to open up about Gaudreau and share some details about his friend, Monahan detailed just how great of a person he is.

«Just an awesome all-around guy,» Monahan said. «Great dad, great friend, and obviously, a special player.»

Now, we will never get to see the magic re-kindled on ice thanks to the driver in New Jersey.

Monahan's words about Gaudreau to the NHLPA's Chris Lomon:

«I am really looking forward to being teammates with Johnny again,» Monahan said. «Johnny is motivated to have a big season and be a huge part of the team and I'm excited to have the opportunity to reignite the chemistry we had for close to a decade."
