A team source within the Penguins organization revealed that in the event of failing to secure the services of Erik Karlsson, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has been actively formulating backup plans.
Grzelcyk has emerged as a potential candidate for this contingency strategy, primarily due to his abilities as a left-handed puck-mover with a keen hockey intellect and impressive speed on the ice, despite his shorter stature of 5-foot-9.
Although Bruins GM Don Sweeney expressed frustration over the persistent trade rumors surrounding Grzelcyk, it does not necessarily deter Dubas from expressing interest in the defenseman.
Grzelcyk, who has one year remaining on his four-year contract, carries a reasonable $3.687 million salary cap hit. Last season, he contributed 26 points (4 goals and 22 assists) in 75 games, while maintaining an impressive plus-46 rating.
In addition to Grzelcyk, Sweeney has reportedly engaged in discussions involving other players such as Linus Ullmark, Jeremy Swayman, Brandon Carlo, Derek Forbort, Jake DeBrusk, and Trent Frederic.
However, it should be noted that this does not necessarily indicate active shopping of these players by the Bruins, but rather inquiries from other teams.
