During the original-six era of the NHL, Jack Adams oversaw GM duties for the Detroit Red Wings, which resulted in a huge trade between the the Boston Bruins and Wings.
The Red Wings were fresh off of their 1955 Stanley Cup win and had one of the best goalies in the NHL. The GM wanted to reload the roster, so he sent Terry Sawchuk to the Boston Bruins in exchange for younger roster players from the team.
An unmatched run with the Black & Gold
On this date in 1957, the legendary Johnny Bucyk was acquired via trade from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for goalie Terry Sawchuk, beginning his incredible 67-year tenure with the Bruins organization.
Acquired: Gilles Boisvert Real Chevrefils Norm Corcoran Warren Godfrey Ed Sanford ↔ Acquired: Marcel Bonin Lorne Davis Terry Sawchuk Vic Stasiuk
Only two-years later did Adams realize his mistake as only Warren Godfrey would be the only player to stick around, as the rest would stick around seven seasons in Hockey town.
This led to another deal where Adams would deal for Terry Sawchuk:
Detroit Red Wings Acquired: Terry Sawchuk ↔ Acquired: Johnny Bucyk Cash
The Bruins in return would receive 500-goal scorer in Johnny Bucyk, while the Red Wings would happily see Sawchuk return to Hockeytown.
While Bucyk would be legendary in play and helping the Bruins realize their Stanley Cup dreams, winning-two Cups and reaching the finals four times in Boston.
Sawchuk however, would never return to form as Adams had hoped and fizzle out soon after.
