The Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins caught the eye of a rival team's top executive recently, although it's unclear which team specifically is being watched.
On Saturday night, as the Leafs played the Bruins in Boston, St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong was seen in attendance. Armstrong has a reputation as one of the NHL's bolder GMs, shown this summer when he signed both forward Dylan Holloway and defenseman Phillip Broberg away from the Oilers with offer sheets.
While it's not clear whether Armstrong was focused on scouting the Leafs or the Bruins, both teams are just outside the playoff picture early in the season, adding some interest. It's probably too early for big moves, but trade speculation has followed both teams lately.
For instance, Toronto's defenseman Timothy Liljegren has been mentioned in trade talks since preseason. Despite signing a new contract this summer, he's only played one NHL game this season, suggesting he might welcome a fresh opportunity elsewhere.
There's also a chance that Armstrong's visit was tied to his role as GM for Canada's team at the upcoming Four Nations Face-Off in February. He may have been evaluating Canadian players from both teams for potential roster spots, knowing tough choices are ahead.
Whatever his reason, it's likely Armstrong will keep his intentions quiet, leaving fans to speculate for now.
