As the Boston Bruins entered free agency, they faced the challenge of filling several vacancies in their roster for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

General Manager Don Sweeney made calculated moves, signing veteran forwards Milan Lucic and James van Riemsdyck, along with defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, to affordable one-year deals.

While these signings may not have been the flashy moves fans hoped for, the Bruins had limited cap space and needed to act swiftly.

Sweeney acknowledged the risks involved in their strategy, but also highlighted the flexibility it provides for the future. The addition of 24-year-old forward Morgan Geekie brings a touch of unpredictability and potential to the team.

Despite some puzzling trades, such as the departure of Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno without receiving immediate returns, Sweeney emphasized the necessity of freeing up cap space to address other lineup needs.

With a solid core led by Charlie McAvoy, David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, and Hampus Lindholm, the Bruins aim to complement their competitive foundation with the right mix of veterans and young prospects.
