Brad Marchand, known for his sharp sense of humor off the ice, showed a different side of himself when he was named team captain by Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery. Marchand expressed his deep appreciation for the honor, describing it as a dream come true.

"As a kid, you never think things like that are possibilities. You're dreaming of being the 0.1 percent just to make the NHL. The 0.1 percent of the 0.1 percent to wear letters. For that to all become a reality when you see that, it's pretty special. It's like people ask what it's like to win a Cup, you can't explain it. It's tough to explain the feelings that I felt. But very, very proud and honored. For sure," Marchand said.

Marchand learned of his new status during a dinner with Montgomery, Bruins president Cam Neely, and general manager Don Sweeney. He earned the captaincy after Patrice Bergeron's retirement, with Bergeron publicly supporting his candidacy.

The decision for captain came down to Marchand and Charlie McAvoy, with Marchand and Milan Lucic being the last remaining members of the Bruins' 2011 NHL Stanley Cup championship team.

As the new team captain, Brad Marchand will lead the Bruins into the 2023-24 NHL season, seeking redemption after a playoff loss to the Florida Panthers in the previous season.
