During the previous NHL season, controversy swirled around as a few players chose not to take part in their teams' Pride Nights.

This sparked passionate debates among fans and raised questions about the NHL's stance on LGBTQ+ support.

Ovechkin's Take

Amidst this debate, certain teams decided to cancel their Pride Nights, and the NHL scrapped all special jersey theme nights for the upcoming season.

Alex Ovechkin, the captain of the Washington Capitals, praised the league for not penalizing players like Ivan Provorov and James Reimer, who opted out of NHL-sanctioned Pride Night events.

Ovechkin remarked,

"Well done. It would be great if it was like this everywhere."

The Washington captain also commended NHL leadership for refraining from imposing sanctions on players such as Ivan Provorov from the Philadelphia Flyers and the current Red Wings goalie,

James Reimer
, who chose not to participate in NHL-sanctioned Pride Night events supporting the LGBTQ community.

Balancing Respect and Concerns

While acknowledging the divisive nature of these events, Ovechkin values the NHL's respect for individual beliefs. However, he also expressed concerns about potential unintended consequences.
