New York Islanders president of hockey operations, Lou Lamoriello, is actively exploring the NHL trade market as the offseason progresses.

While the team's interest in acquiring Alex DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators has been widely reported, the negotiations are proving to be challenging.

DeBrincat, a restricted free agent, declined an eight-year extension in Ottawa and seeks a contract similar to Timo Meier's recent deal with the New Jersey Devils.

With limited cap space available, Lamoriello will need to make significant moves to accommodate such a contract. Additionally, there is uncertainty surrounding DeBrincat's long-term commitment to the Islanders.

If the DeBrincat trade falls through, the Islanders may turn their attention to other options, potentially engaging in discussions with Atlantic Division rivals. The Boston Bruins, in particular, have a need for centers with the potential retirement of veteran Patrice Bergeron.

A player like Jean-Gabriel Pageau could pique the interest of Bruins GM Don Sweeney, as he possesses similar qualities to Bergeron, excelling in penalty killing and faceoffs.

To initiate trade talks, the Islanders could propose a package including Pageau and restricted free agent Oliver Wahlstrom in exchange for Jake DeBrusk.

DeBrusk, entering the final year of his contract with a $4 million cap hit, had a career-best season with 50 points in 64 games. Placed alongside Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal on the top line, DeBrusk would provide the scoring threat the Islanders seek.

While DeBrusk had previously requested a trade a couple of years ago, his stance may have changed under new Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery. However, given the Bruins' lack of depth down the middle, exploring the possibility of this trade makes sense.

The success of the trade hinges on several factors, including the Islanders' willingness to part ways with Pageau and Wahlstrom and the Bruins' assessment of DeBrusk's future value.

Draft picks may also be involved to balance the exchange of assets. From a financial perspective, the trade can be accommodated by both teams, providing the Islanders with more cap space and allowing the Bruins to sign their remaining RFAs.

While it may be a difficult decision for both sides, trades of this nature often involve sacrifices to achieve mutual goals.
