Bruins have made a huge decision with one of their prospects
It seems like the Boston Bruins and their defensive prospect, Frederic Brunet, have reached a decision on where the young blueliner will play in the upcoming 2023-24 season. The 19-year-old defenseman, selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, is headed to the American Hockey League's Providence Bruins.
According to a tweet from Dominic Tiano, a trusted source and good friend, Brunet, standing at 6'2" and weighing 185 pounds, will be joining the Providence Bruins to further his development.
Last season, Brunet split his time between the Rimouski Oceanic and the Victoriaville Tigres in the QMJHL, amassing impressive numbers with 38 points in 36 games and 38 points in 28 games, respectively.
As of now, Brunet remains unsigned by the Boston Bruins organization, but his placement in Providence indicates that a three-year, entry-level contract offer could be on the horizon.
With the Boston Bruins' development camp having taken place in July at the Warrior Ice Arena in Massachusetts, questions arose about Brunet's next move. The options were to either return to the QMJHL to continue honing his skills or make the jump to the AHL to challenge himself in the professional ranks.
Notably, Brunet made a brief appearance with the AHL Providence Bruins last season, contributing two assists in a single game. His arrival for the full season will bolster the defensive core of the Providence Bruins, joining other promising prospects like Alec Regula, Dan Renouf, Ethan Ritchie, Reilly Walsh, and Parker Wortherspoon.
The Providence Bruins' blueline looks promising, and there's also the possibility of adding more depth after the NHL Bruins' training camp this fall, depending on player performances.
Players like Mason Lohrei, Ian Mitchell, and Derek Forbort could potentially join the AHL team if they don't make the NHL roster. Forbort's rumored demotion to the AHL could provide the Bruins organization with valuable salary cap savings.
