Charlie Coyle Releases A Statement In Recent Interview
For an entire offseason, Charlie Coyle prepared to be a top-two center for the Boston Bruins. That lasted two games.
"Matt Poitras, 19, has been the No. 2 center the past two practices. Coyle is back in his usual spot on the third line, centering James van Riemsdyk and Trent Frederic."
Van Riemsdyk and Frederic are not high-end pace-pushers like Brad Marchand or Jake DeBrusk, Coyle's previous wings. They are pickup trucks, tasked for work in the down-low slop.
«We're three big guys who can play with the puck down there and hang on to it,» Coyle said after a Wednesday tuneup at Sharks Ice. «Be around the net front. We can all do that a little more. But it's not like we all have to have our places, right? We're all comfortable anywhere.»
"Some players might be angry about a third-line demotion after a summer of top-two promises. Coyle is not like that."
«Some people might slate one line here. Some might say the other line's here. The other line might be here,» Coyle said, moving his right hand up and down in front of him. «It doesn't matter where it's slated, right? It's a team. It doesn't matter if you're slated on the first two lines. It's how many minutes you're playing. We all want to play more minutes, right? It doesn't matter if you're up here or here or wherever. You just want to play the best you can with whoever you're playing with, play more minutes and be the best you can.
«I really don't look at it as, Oh, I've got to be the first two on the depth chart right here.' I just want to play well wherever I am and whoever I'm playing with. And play more minutes.»
"So far, Coyle has totaled 33:08 of even-strength and short-handed ice time. No forward on the team has more."
