The National Hockey League, along with other National leagues have been subject to change throughout the years.

Currently there are some ticky tacky rules in the NHL that both players and fans don't agree on. For example; shootouts as a whole are becoming obsolete or unwanted. A large majority of fans and players agree that shootouts should be removed rather just have sudden death overtime until one team scores.

«Get rid of the shootouts. Just do three-on-three [overtime] until someone scores.»
Johnny Gaudreau said when asked about possible rule changes.

Bruins' star forward Charlie McAvoy was asked a similar question and he brought up an interesting idea, involving power plays:

«I've seen USA Hockey actually fool around with this, and it's that you can't ice the puck anymore on the power play. If you're not able to ice the puck, then you're forcing guys to try and make plays, try and lob it perfectly. I think it would make it really difficult.»

The NHL has already prevented teams from icing the puck in order to get a line change, if a team does so, that same line has to stay out and are not allowed to delay the game by slowly returning to the other end of the ice.

Charlie McAvoy's idea would follow a similar basis, that a team cannot ice the puck on the penalty kill without being penalized in some manner. Or depending on how you look at it, McAvoy is saying teams on the power player should not be allowed to ice the puck at all. Either option speeds up the game and would make for some interesting odd man rushes and counter rushes.
