David Krejci reveals the real reason behind his retirement from the NHL
Amidst a flurry of offseason departures, a familiar name joined the list of retirees last week, marking a significant shift in the landscape for the 2023 Boston Bruins.
The team bid farewell to center David Krejci, who hung up his skates after an illustrious 16-year stint with the franchise.
Krejci's decision comes on the heels of Patrice Bergeron's retirement, signaling a changing of the guard for the Bruins. With both stalwarts departing, a new era of hockey is dawning in Boston.
In a candid post-retirement Zoom session with the media, Krejci shed light on his choice to step away from NHL action. He revealed,
"I retired from the NHL because I know my body can't take the whole season. I have things that I would have to get done which would involve surgeries. And at my age, I'm not ready to do that. I don't want to do that anymore."
Krejci's final season was marked by a lower-body injury that limited his availability.
Despite his absence, he returned for crucial playoff moments, highlighting his dedication and commitment to the team's success.
The decision to retire wasn't hastily made; Krejci shared,
"The decision [to retire from the NHL] was made, I would say, when my injuries started to happen at the end of the season. But I didn't want to rush to my decision [either]. I really wanted to take my time and really think things over, because you don't want to make decisions when the emotions are going through you."
A key highlight of Krejci's career was his time with the Bruins, where he played over 1,000 games, leaving a lasting mark on the franchise.
His 1,032 games in a Boston jersey place him fifth on the team's all-time list. His contributions extend to his 231 goals (13th all-time) and 786 points (ninth in franchise history).
Although he's retired from the NHL, Krejci isn't closing the door entirely. He envisions a possible return to the international stage, contemplating participation in the 2024 World Championships in Prague, after a stint with Olomouc HC in his hometown.
In the end, Krejci's retirement marks the conclusion of an era, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, resilience, and unmatched dedication to the Boston Bruins.
