On February 3rd, 40 years ago, in 1984, the Boston Bruins traded Peter McNab to the Vancouver Canucks for Jim Nill.

41 years ago today ON THIS DAY in hockey history (February 3, 1984):

The
@NHLBruins
acquire Jim Nill from the
@Canucks
for Peter McNab

Peter McNab was a very good Bruins player who played on the team from the 1976-77 to the 1982-83 seasons after coming over from the Buffalo Sabres.

McNab, in his first season with the Bruins had 86 points in 80 games and continued to be a plus point-per-game player for four straight years afterward until he had 76 points in 80 games in the 1981-82 season.

Towards the end of McNab's career, he only had 30 points in 52 games with Boston, which compared to what he was producing, is a substantial decrease. So, the Bruins traded him to the Canucks for Jim Nill.

Nill was on the younger side of things, however, the trade isn't one to bloat about if you're Boston.

Nill only spent two seasons with Boston and in those two seasons he played 76 games and only scored 15 points. Nill's career never really took off until the year after he left the Bruins and he went to the Winnipeg Jets and Detroit Red Wings, and on the Red Wings, he'd have 85 points in a single season.

Jim Nill after his career got hired as the Dallas Stars general manager. When Nill got there, the Stars were in the gutter. Now, they're one of the best teams in the year and Nill even won the 2023-24 GM of the year award.

Not only was Nill a good player later in his career, he's an even better general manager. It just sucks he never was able to take off with the Boston Bruins, considering what they traded for him as well.
