During a spring where little seems to have gone right for a record-setting Bruins roster, the sight of Cassidy leading the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final feels like salt in the wound looking back.
The firing of Bruce Cassidy came during the summer of 2022.
With Bruce Cassidy behind the bench the Bruins qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of Cassidy's six seasons. They lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games in the Eastern Conference First Round last season.
Cassidy went 245-108-46, and 36-37 in the playoffs, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019, falling to the St. Louis Blues in seven games.
This move in hindsight looked like the best thing for the organization, after setting an NHL record 65-win season, under Head Coach Jim Montgomery in his first year. But it went all to waste, after a poor showing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Blowing a 3-1 series lead to the No. 8 seed Florida Panthers, all while their former coach Bruce Cassidy, has the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.
Clearly, the Vegas Golden Knights have capitalized on Bruce Cassidy as a Head Coach. Becoming an even stronger team than in recent years, as they never wavered.
While star players like Jack Eichel have bought into Cassidy's game plan in search of a sought-after championship, Vegas has not wavered against multiple waves of adversity.
Adin Hill, once fixed as the third option on Vegas' goalie depth chart, has now posted a .937 save percentage through 11 playoff outings. (From « As Bruce Cassidy sits four wins away from the Stanley Cup, should the Bruins regret canning their former coach?» - Conor Ryan, Boston.com (6/2/23)
Time will tell if the Boston Bruins made the right call moving Bruce Cassidy or not, but so far it doesn't look to good.
