Former Boston Bruins fan favourite defenseman has surfaced as a top trade candidate after having a career year.

Ex-Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk has emerged as a top trade candidate for the Pittsburgh Penguins after having a career year.

According to The Fourth Period, three contending teams have expressed a lot of interest in Matt Grzelcyk. Those teams being the Winnipeg Jets, Colorado Avalanche, and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Former Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk has appeared in 55 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins this season scoring just one goal, but set a new career high in assists with 26, and points with 27.

In the off-season Matt Grzelcyk left the Boston Bruins and signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins, signing a one-year deal worth $2.75 million.

With the Pittsburgh Penguins currently re-tooling, GM Kyle Dubas is more than likely going to move players that are set to be a unrestricted free agent including Matt Grzelcyk.

All three teams have shown interest in Grzelcyk due to his offensive abilities, but according to The Fourth Period, the Tampa Bay Lightning are being one of the more aggressive teams to acquire Grzelyck

«He's a guy that can step in and help a contender right away,» an NHL executive told The Fourth Period. Winnipeg and Colorado are believed to view Grzelcyk as a cheaper alternative to higher-profile trade targets.

A trade isn't likely to materialze until closer to the NHL trade deadline so the Penguns can maximize their return for Grzelcyk, but his value is increasing as the season goes on.

«Grzelcyk, not Erik Karlsson or Kris Letang, is quarterbacking the Penguins' power play and making an impact offensively.»

There is expectations that Matt Grzelcyk will fetch a third-round pick for the Pittsburgh Penguins but a bidding war between the contending teams could increase his value.

The Boston Bruins opted to not re-sign Matt Grzelcyk in the off-season and instead brought in Nikita Zadorov.
