While the roster of competing prospects hasn't been officially released yet, this event presents a golden opportunity for emerging talents to shine before the Bruins' training camp kicks off on September 20 at the Warrior Ice Arena.
The Bruins have been a consistent force in the playoffs, missing out only twice in the past 16 years. Due to their track record, the front office has been confident in deploying draft picks and top prospects to strengthen the lineup. However, this season, some of these young guns might just make a strong case to secure a spot or two on the final roster.
Forwards to Watch:
The lone first-round pick from recent drafts (21st overall in 2021) showed great promise with the Providence Bruins before a late-season concussion. His impressive stats include 37 points in 54 games for Boston's AHL affiliate. Lysell's speed and skill make him a versatile player, excelling in both forechecking and a solid two-way game.
This center embarked on his first full professional season with Providence last year, albeit with mixed results. Standing tall at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Beecher leverages his size and strength, though he recorded 23 points in 61 games.
Known for his productivity in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Harrison tallied 99 points in 57 games across the Oshawa Generals and Windsor Spitfires before making his pro debut in Providence last season.
Poitras was another point-producing sensation in the OHL, boasting 95 points (16 goals, 79 assists) in 63 games with the Guelph Storm. This 19-year-old center recently signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Bruins, and GM Don Sweeney praised his "sneaky" skills and impressive shot during the development camp.
Georgii Merkulov:
An undrafted forward with a knack for scoring, Merkulov could be a dark horse in the race for a roster spot. The 22-year-old notched 24 goals and 31 assists, totaling 55 points with Providence last season.
Defence to Keep an Eye On:
While the Bruins boast solid defensive depth with McAvoy, Lindholm, Carlo, and Grzelcyk, a few prospects are worth watching:
This 22-year-old Ohio State University product turned heads during the summer's development camp. Known for his size and puck control, Lohrei has the potential to make a significant impact, and Sweeney is excited about his trajectory within the organization.
Frederic Brunet:
After a successful stint in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), Brunet made the leap to Providence. He set career-highs in goals (10) and points (38) in 30 games for the Victoriaville Tigres. While eligible for QMJHL return, full-time development in Providence might be more beneficial.
Edward, at 6-foot-2 and 194 pounds, embodies the quintessential Boston Bruins defenseman. Physical and unafraid to take on opponents at the blue line, he made a leap in his point production with the OHL's London Knights, tallying five goals and 20 assists in 65 games last season.
The Bruins' prospects will face off against counterparts from the Sabres, Senators, Canadiens, Penguins, and Devils.
Boston's schedule includes matches against Pittsburgh on September 15 at 3:30 p.m. ET, Montreal on September 16 at 3:30 p.m. ET, and New Jersey on September 18 at 10 a.m. ET.
