On Friday afternoon, news broke that the Vancouver Canucks were buying out the remaining four years of Oliver Ekman-Larsson's contract.
With his no-movement clause, OEL got to skip the waivers and all that ordeal and skip right to the end up.
Now that Ekman-Larsson is technically out of Vancouver his financials are not Prior to the buyout, Ekman-Larsson's contract was set to end in 2027. Now, he'll be on the books at a reduced rate until 2031.
Now with Ekman-Larsson out of Vancouver he is set to hit the unrestricted free agency on July 1 of this year.
With that in mind Frank Seravalli had his thoughts on where OEL could be shipped off:
Where Will OEL Land?
Frank Seravalli:
«I think there's probably a whole bunch (teams), and it's all going to come down to his willingness to play for a short-term, short-money deal, which I would think at this point is the smartest thing for him. He can double-dip, he's already getting paid basically $2.5 million from the Canucks for the next number of years you've got that in your pocket already. Go sign a one-year deal somewhere with a contender: Boston, Tampa, go down the list. There's a whole bunch of teams. I would imagine even the Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights. A lot of teams could add a left-shot defenceman. That makes sense.»
The Boston Bruins could possibly be a good fit for Ekman-Larsson, especially with the Bruins expected to be losing key assets this summer.
