On this day in hockey history, September 3rd, 1966, Bobby Orr made his mark by signing his inaugural NHL contract. The deal spanned two years and totaled $70,000, which was a significant sum back then, marking the highest salary across the league at that time. Additionally, Orr secured a $25,000 signing bonus, adding a touch of extra flair to the arrangement.

What set this moment apart were the negotiations that unfolded. Orr had initially been offered $20,000 $7,000 for the first year, $8,000 for the following, and a $5,000 signing bonus. However, a pivotal figure in these discussions, Orr's lawyer Alan Eagleson, introduced a new dimension. Eagleson boldly proposed that Orr would opt to play for Canada's national team rather than Boston unless he received a minimum of $100,000.

In those days, entry-level contracts didn't face salary cap constraints, and rookie earnings typically remained under $10,000. During that era, players often had little choice but to accept the league's terms. These negotiations acted as a catalyst, leading to the emergence of player agents and standard salary talks. Eagleson eventually took on the role of the NHLPA's executive director, and his journey took a complex turn, eventually leading to legal matters.

This historic moment showcases Orr's impact both on the ice and within the broader context of hockey's evolution.
