It was a shock to many when the New York Rangers announced that Reilly Smith was going to be a healthy scratch for their game against the Montreal Canadiens, and since then his name has surfaced in trade rumours.
The Rangers acquired Reilly Smith from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the off-season for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
Today the team decided to make some changes to their roster after losing their previous five games, healthy scratching Reilly Smith, and in addition the Rangers got back Chris Kreider, and Filip Chytil who both returned from injury.
Reilly Smith isn't having his best year during his first year with the New York Rangers as he currently has a stat line of three goals, nine assists for 12 points in 22 games along with a -1 plus-minus rating. Recently he has been struggling as in his last five games he has just one point being an assist.
Reilly Smith appeared in 163 games while apart of the Boston Bruins organization over two seasons where he had a total of 33 goals along with 91 points.
With Smith's age and the way he is producing it doesn't seem like the New York Rangers will be able to get much for him, but they may be able to package him with one of Jacob Trouba and or Chris Kreider as they have both been listed by the team as trade potentials.
