During training camp, the Boston Bruins brought in veteran forward Tyler Johnson on a professional tryout (PTO) agreement. He had a solid showing, but despite that, Johnson remains sidelined. He can't play in a game unless the Bruins sign him to a contract, and right now, that hasn't happened.
The situation is a bit unusual. With the 2024-25 season already underway, Johnson is still in Boston, skating and staying in shape while waiting for an opportunity. According to Chris Johnston, who provided an update on TSN's Insider Trading, the Bruins like what they saw from Johnson during camp. However, they are currently tight on salary cap space, so making room for him has been a challenge.
At 34 years old, Johnson is no stranger to the NHL. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2011. Last season, he played 67 games for the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring 17 goals and adding 14 assists. Throughout his career, he has skated in 738 NHL games, tallying 193 goals and 238 assists.
Johnson is also a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Lightning (2020, 2021) and has played in 116 playoff games, scoring 32 goals.
While the Bruins would like to add Johnson, the salary cap situation remains a hurdle. In the meantime, Johnson remains hopeful and continues training with the team, waiting for his chance to join the roster.
