Almost a week has passed since seasoned NHL forward Corey Perry issued a statement in the aftermath of his contract termination from the Chicago Blackhawks, vehemently denying rumors linking him romantically to Melanie Bedard, the mother of former teammate Connor Bedard. Perry's complete statement is provided below:

"I would like to sincerely apologize to the entire Chicago Blackhawks organization, including ownership, management, coaches, trainers, employees, and my teammates. I would also like to apologize to my fans and my family. I am embarrassed, and I have let you all down."

"As a result of my actions, there has been speculation and rumors. I am sickened by the impact this has had on others, and I want to make it clear that in no way did this situation involve any of my teammates or their families. Most importantly, I want to directly apologize to those who have been negatively affected, and I am sorry for the additional impact on others it has created. My behavior was inappropriate and wrong."

"I have started working with experts in the mental health and substance abuse fields to discuss my struggles with alcohol, and I will take whatever steps necessary to ensure this never happens again. I hope to regain the trust and respect of everyone who has believed in me throughout my career."

"Once again, I am deeply sorry."

Subsequent reports have confirmed Perry's dismissal from the team due to inappropriate and unacceptable conduct fueled by alcohol consumption. In essence, Perry's actions, likely exacerbated by alcohol, transpired during an event involving corporate partners and team employees. NHL insider Frank Seravalli shed light on the incident last week:

"According to sources, an alcohol-fueled incident involving Perry was alleged to have occurred during an event that included corporate partners and team employees in attendance."

While Perry's actions did not result in criminal charges or fatalities, they were deemed severe enough for the Blackhawks to sever ties. Perry has committed to self-improvement through rehabilitation, prompting questions about his future in the NHL.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was queried today about the situation and whether Perry would need permission from Bettman before securing a new contract. Insights from NHL insiders Elliotte Friedman and Chris Johnston were sought:

Personally, the necessity for Perry to seek Bettman's permission is unclear, but given Bettman's involvement in various aspects of the NHL, it remains a possibility. Notably, former Blackhawks executives Joel Quenneville and Stan Bowman are still awaiting Bettman's permission to return to the league following the 2021 Brad Aldrich scandal.
