Initially, people wondered why he left, but recent news gives us a better idea.
During the later part of the second period, Matthews was seen arguing with his teammates Mitch Marner and William Nylander on the bench.
After that, he didn't play for the whole third period. At first, it was thought he might have gotten sick from something he ate, but we didn't know for sure until after the game.
After the game, Toronto's head coach, Sheldon Keefe, talked to the media and said it was the team's doctors who decided Matthews shouldn't play anymore. Some reports said he might have needed medical treatment, like getting fluids through a tube.
A day later, as they get ready for Game 5, Keefe gave an update on Matthews' health. Sadly, we still don't know exactly what's wrong. Keefe said it's not a normal sickness that goes away quickly, and it seems to get worse whenever Matthews plays.
Keefe said,
Matthews being sick couldn't have come at a worse time. With Game 5 coming up, it's unclear if he'll be able to play. If his sickness, which might be food poisoning, keeps bothering him, the Leafs might have to play without him, which would be tough.
Matthews being sick has definitely affected how he plays. After playing really well in Game 2, he hasn't been as good in Games 3 and 4.
As Game 5 gets closer, the Leafs need to figure out how to help Matthews get better quickly. If they can't, their hopes of a long playoff run might end sooner than they'd like, and they'll have to pack up and leave the locker room earlier than planned.
