The Winnipeg Jets are gearing up for their second annual South Asian Heritage Night, presented by Canada Life, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m. as they take on the Colorado Avalanche.

This event is designed to honor Manitoba's vibrant South Asian community, featuring a blend of food, music, dance, and art.

In a notable departure, the Amber Trails School choir, predominantly composed of South Asian students, will deliver not only the American national anthem but also a Punjabi and English rendition of O Canada. The Winnipeg Jets note that this marks a historic moment as the Canadian national anthem will be sung in Punjabi at a major professional sports event, showcasing the language's growing significance as Canada's third most spoken.

Before the game, DJs rooted in South Asian heritage, such as DJ Hira, will spin Punjabi music. The celebration goes beyond music, extending to culinary delights with concession stands offering various South Asian-inspired dishes. From classic butter chicken and saag paneer bowls to inventive tandoori chicken pizza and the delightful sweet gulab jamun, fans can savor the flavors of South Asian cuisine.

This event not only highlights the rich cultural tapestry of the South Asian community but also emphasizes the Jets' dedication to inclusivity, recognizing the significance of Canada's multicultural mosaic.

The historic rendition of the Canadian national anthem in Punjabi adds a unique and memorable dimension to an evening devoted to celebrating unity in diversity.
