At least one restricted free agent is coming down to the wire to sign an NHL contract to play during the 2022-23 season.

That player is Alex Formenton of the Ottawa Senators, who has until 5 pm EST Thursday, or he won't be eligible to play until next season. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman discussed it in a written version of his 32 Thoughts:

''Alex Formenton must sign a contract by 5 p.m. ET on Thursday, or he cannot play in the NHL this season. No clarity into the 2018 World Juniors investigation is expected by then. A few weeks ago, there was some belief he'd be traded and resume his NHL career in another city. We will see what happens in the next 24 hours, but that belief has dissipated.''

The middle-six forward was valuable on the Senators last season, recording 18 goals and 14 assists in 79 games, including five shorthanded goals. However, there are reports that Formenton is facing legal issues off the ice.

The 23-year-old may be facing discipline for potential involvement in the Team Canada 2018 World Junior Championship team's sexual assault case. He's one of the few players who didn't respond to the allegations from media members either directly or through his representative.
