Currently, 16 American and 48 Canadian players are under contract to teams in the KHL, but that is expected to change immediately. With the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, governments are warning their residents to leave Russia and Belarus immediately.
The United States Government went even further, issuing the following message yesterday:
Yesterday the Canadian Government issued a follow-up message to a previous message they'd sent. This message encouraged all Canadians in the country to leave immediately. There are lots of fears surrounding the conditions and safety of those remaining in the country, as per CTV:
''Canadians continue to play hockey for Kontinental Hockey League teams in Russia and Belarus despite the Canadian government's warning to get out of those countries.''
''Canada has been firmly on the side of Ukraine in the conflict with $626 million in military aid and over $320 million in humanitarian assistance since February, as well imposing financial sanctions on Russia and Belarus.''
