Colby Cave passed away on April 11th, 2020, after four days in a medically induced coma due to a cyst that caused bleeding in his brain. He was only 25-years-old.

Cave signed with the Boston Bruins as an undrafted free agent on April 7th, 2015 and made his NHL debut with the club over two years later on December 21st, 2017. He scored his first goal a year after that, on December 17th, 2018, in a 4-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Cave was claimed off waiver by the Edmonton Oilers on January 19th, 2019 and spent the rest of his career with the club.

The Bruins' former head coach was Colby Cave's first coach in the AHL and the NHL. Colby's wife Emily wrote a heartwarming post on Twitter after the news that the Bruins had fired Cassidy on Monday evening:

» Butchy was Colb's first coach in the AHL, & then NHL. Butchy & Julie were the FIRST hockey coach/ staff (out of BOS & EDM) that I called when Colb died 3:00am. Butchy recorded a video to play to Colb when he was in a coma, I still have it. Some of the best people we know.»

Clearly, Bruce Cassidy had a significant effect on his players and their family's lives.
