A former NHL referee tragically passed away at the age of 58 after being apart of over 700 NHL games in his career.

Over the past couple of years, many NHL figures have sadly passed away, and now another one has.

Mike Hasenfratz who was an NHL official for over 700 games has unfortunately passed away.

The difference in a game nowadays, is whether or not you get good officials or bad officials.

Depending on which ones you get, it could be a difference maker in any game.

NHL officials take a lot of heat whether it be from head coach's, fans or the players. Obviously they are only human and are going to make mistakes.

But many agree that over the years the officiating has gotten better or at least more consistent.

Mike Hasenfratz was one of the good officials, and he appeared in over 700 NHL games in his career between 2000 and 2014.

Then he would go on to retire, and was known as one of the most respected officials in today's game.

Monday morning some sad news struck Hasenfratz and his family, as it was announced the 58-year-old had tragically passed away.

This is what the league had to say about Hasenfratz after his passing:

The NHL mourns the passing of referee Mike Hasenfratz, who officiated over 700 NHL games from 2000-01 to 2013-14. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the many colleagues he worked alongside throughout his career in hockey.
