Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk are both leaving the Calgary Flames and it brings up a worry of other Canadian teams with American superstars.
The biggest name that comes to mind is Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs, arguably a top three player in the NHL.
Calgary reporter Eric Francis (who is probably still sour) stated:
''Toronto is a different animal than Calgary, but if you're a @MapleLeafs fan and you don't think the threat of Auston Matthews leaving like compatriots Gaudreau and Tkachuk is real you are kidding yourself. At this time next year the club will need to know his intentions.''
However, NHL insider Frank Seravalli, who is a lot more trustworthy, thinks otherwise:
Matthews' contract expires after the 2023-24 season and there's definitely a chance he'll leave to be closer to home. Especially if the Leafs don't make it out of the first round by then.
