And according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, this deal directly affects the Boston Bruins and general manager, Don Sweeney, in a big way. The club finds itself in a similar situation with goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
Swayman was relied upon throughout last season, and he's all but taken the starting reigns ahead of Linus Ullmark in the Bruins crease. The 23-year-old is obviously a big piece to Boston's future, but there could be a small problem.
Currently, the Bruins are already over the salary cap by about $2 million, and as it stands now, just over $18 million next season. Sweeney and company are still looking to lock up David Pasternak to a long-term contract, along with seven other forwards who are unrestricted free agents after the season is up.
