The NHL once claimed they had no intention of ever adding advertisements to their jerseys. That has clearly changed as several teams have already added one patch in a specific location.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly stated:

''I can't even tell you that I heard of [those concerns] before this week ... there's been no discussion or consideration about expanding the patch program.''

While the league claims that the plan is currently to only use one spot, that may not be the case. As reported by Greg Wyshynski of ESPN:

''One ad patch. Nothing more. For now.'' Keith Wachtel, NHL chief business officer and executive vice president of global partnerships, said that if you asked Bettman, he would say it will not expand beyond one ad.'

Wachtel was quoted as saying:

''But we also had a position, like every league, to say that we weren't going to put an ad on our jersey ... So you never want to say 'never,' but that is not in the foreseeable future.''

Despite this claim that there are no plans to expand this, the league has already designated three other spots on the jersey as future ad locations.

The NHL has designated four spots for jersey ads: left and right shoulders and left and right chest.

As per ESPN, the NHL has designated four spots for jersey ads: left and right shoulders and left and right chest. However, as Wachtel continued:

''In the current program, it's one patch, in one area only.''

As long as the NHL doesn't follow suit with European leagues, one small patch like some teams have now should be no problem.
