The Hockey Community Is Mourning The Passing Of Legendary Mike Lange
Today, the hockey community is mourning another loss, this time of a legend who spent almost 50 years in the NHL before tragically passing away at the age of 78-years-old.
An announcement late last night confirmed that Pittsburgh Penguins legendary broadcaster Mike Lange has unfortunately passed away. He spent nearly five decades with the Penguins organization and was a beloved figure.
To start off his career, Lange was the voice of the San Diego Gulls of the Western Hockey League, and then finally made his dreams come true when he joined the Pittsburgh Penguins organization in 1974.
After one season with the organization, Lange ended up leaving due to bankruptcy, and went on to be the voice of the Washington Diplomats, which is a soccer team, but then returned to the Penguins in the 76-77 season and was there for the rest of his career.
Lange was dealing with some terrible health issued that would make his career come to an end in 2021 tragically forcing him to leave the booth for good.
After the announcement of Mike Lange's passing, the Pittsburgh Penguins organization issued a heartbreaking statement to honour his legacy with the team:
Mike Lange was a wordsmith - a magician behind the mic.
The Californian quickly became a quintessential Pittsburgher, and his colorful calls and smooth cadence brought Penguins hockey to life.
The Hall-of-Famer's voice is synonymous with the biggest calls in franchise history, including all five Stanley Cup Championships, and his unique one-liners and knack for anticipating game-changing plays set him apart from other announcers.
Only Mike could make the biggest names in hockey seem even more magical with just his voice.
Mike was so much more than a legendary broadcaster.
He was respected by the players and coaches and beloved by the fans. Because of him, Hockey Nights in Pittsburgh had the entire city "smilin' like a butcher's dog".
This news is heartbreaking, a true NHL legend is gone..
