Throughout NHL history, some bizarre and random things have happened both on-ice and behind the scenes. NHL Benchside (@nhlbenchside) shared a post on Instagram of just a few of those interested tad bits.
Check them out below:
Home-ice Advantage: In the 1952-53 season, a rule was set that permitted teams to dress 15 skaters on the road and 16 skaters at home.
First Round Twice: Nick Boynton is the only player to be drafted in the first round twice. He was taken ninth in 1997 by the Washington Capitals and 21st in 1999 by the Boston Bruins.
Cup Ownership: The NHL doesn't own the cup. Originally it was to be given to the top amateur team and is under full control of the cup trustees, meaning technically, a non-NHL team can win it.
First Team All-MP: While playing in the NHL, Red Kelly served as a member of Canadian Parliament from June 1962 to November 1965. He retired from the NHL in 1967.
SJ Rubber Puckies: When naming the San Jose Sharks, both the names Rubber Puckies and Screaming Squids were on the consideration list.
Ordered Apology: While reffing an NHL game, Kerry Fraser ordered Tyson Nash to apologize to Theo Fleury for making fun of his alcohol and drug problems as they stemmed from the abuse he received from his coach as a junior.
CBA Soccer Rule: Under the current CBA, the home team must provide the visiting team with pieces of equipment, including a soccer ball for them to warm up with.
