The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals just combined for a late night trade involving Lars Eller that has surprised the hockey world.

Earlier today Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas stated that all Penguins are on the trade market except for the captain Sidney Crosby.

Immediately former Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk was rumoured to be a big trade candidate for the Penguins, but surprisingly he was not the first to go.

The Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins both just confirmed that a deal has been completed between the two teams and it has surprised the hockey community.

The trade alone isn't surprising, but the fact that Dubas just revealed everyone is on the trade block today, and he already made a trade is what took a lot of people by surprise. He wasted no time to make some moves.

The official trade is sending Lars Eller back to the Washington Capitals where he won the Stanley Cup back in 2017-18.

In return the Pittsburgh Penguins are getting two draft picks, Washington's third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, and a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft that was originally the Chicago Blackhawks.

NEWS | The Washington Capitals have acquired forward Lars Eller from the Pittsburgh Penguins for Washington's third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a fifth-round pick (originally from Chicago) in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Playing third line minutes this season, Lars Eller has 7 points in 17 games for a team that has seriously struggled.
