The Tampa Bay Lightning are going to make a surprising move, letting their Captain Steven Stamkos, become a free agent.

Stamkos has been an institution in Tampa Bay, since his arrival in 2008, dethroning Vinny Leclavier in total points for the franchise, while claiming the franchise record for most games played.

He also delivered two Stanley Cups to the team in 2020 and 2021 and followed it up surprisingly with his first 100-point season in the NHL quickly after.

He hasn't slowed down either, posting 84 points( 34 G, 50 A) last year, while amassing 81 points( 40 G, 41 A) this year.

He has only failed to reach a 50-point season once, during his rookie year in 2008.

The Lightning can afford to lose a high-scoring winger thanks to Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point being staples in the lineup. But they will have to find a way to replace his production with a limited $5.355 in cap space available.

GM Don Sweeney could find a way to lure Stamkos to Boston and use his veteran leadership and post-season pedigree to bring a Stanley Cup back to Boston.

While he could command an expensive contract, of which his last AAV was $8.5 Million, his production alone could justify his roster spot.

The Bruins could negotiate a team-friendly deal if Sweeney is slick enough and sell him on the solid goaltending, and coaching in order to lure him to Boston, as like Tampa Bay they're a regular post-season team.

The time for Sweeney to swoop in on GM Julien Brisebois' mistake now, before a team like Detroit makes an offer.
