A monster trade offer involving Linus Ullmark has just been released publicly
Linus Ullmark is the 2022-2023 Vezina Trophy winner and has been a successful goaltender in the Boston Bruins system.
But even with a Vezina Trophy under his belt, the goalie's situation is very opaque as the goalie's values fluctuate.
During a post-season conference, Don Sweeney recounted a trade between the Vancouver Canucks, where they traded Corey Schneider in 2013 for a 9th overall pick, in example of a trade that could be comparable to Linus Ullmark's situation.
«It's really what teams needs and what the market will bear, and ultimately it comes down to supply and demand, what a team wants and what you might have, ultimately, that generally shapes the trade market,» Sweeney said. «There isn't a lot of goaltenders in exchange, so it's a small sample size to begin with, but arguably, they change and what other teams need will set the return.»
If the Bruins are able to secure a trade for the goalie, plus move his $5 Million AAV cap hit, draft assets could be the best option.
Could a high-end forward, like Martin Necas be a solution, despite him being due a pay-raise? Maybe if the stars align.
Could the Bruins leverage Ullmark in a way to nab not only a top-end player, but draft picks as well? It seems likely right??
«After failing in a bid to acquire goaltender Linus Ullmark from the Boston Bruins at the NHL trade deadline in March, (Senators GM Steve) Staios and the club's hockey operations department are expected to make another pitch before the draft set for June 28-29 in Las Vegas,» Garrioch wrote.
«The Senators, Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils were among several teams that made a push for the 30-year-old Ullmark before the deadline. The indications are Ullmark refused to change his 15-team no trade list, which meant a possible deal to the Devils was scuttled.»
We're uncertain whether or not Ullmark himself nixed the trade, due to the teams poor defensive structure, but it seems like a contending team in the east could be more suitable for the goalie who wants to be #1 on the next team he's on.
If the Senators are on his NTC, in order to acquire Jakob Chychrun and capital, Sweeney and the Bruins must negotiate with their goalie in order to waive his no-trade clause to Ottawa.
«A league executive said Thursday he believes the Senators would likely have to offer defenceman Jakob Chychrun along with a first-round pick and another selection to acquire Ullmark,» Garrioch wrote. «Even then, he has the hammer because he does have the modified no-trade clause.»
The Bruins in all likelihood would like to recoup a 1st round pick in return for Ullmark, and the Senators would undoubtedly like to fix their terrible goaltending situation.
Boston's 1st round pick was acquired during the trade with the Red Wings for Tyler Bertuzzi in 2023. Which was then flipped for Alex DeBrincat soon after.
It seems unlikely that the Senators would package a 1st round pick, and a top-pairing defenseman, like Jakob Chychrun however. He's on contract through 2024-2025 and has a controlled cap hit at $4.6 Million AAV, Chychrun would solve many issues on the team's defense.
But they could use someone like Martin Necas in the top six, and would be an ideal move for Sweeney.
But should the stars align for the Bruins and Senators, they shouldn't pass up a chance at Jakob Chyrchrun as well.
