The Boston Bruins are in a tenuous situation, as the team has failed to live up to expectations early in the season.

The team is now, 3-4-1 in 8 games, and the fourth line has been arguably more productive than the rest of the Bruin's offensive weapons.

This is astounding considering the team picked up Elias Lindholm, during the offseason. A pick-me-up for the team's first line, which Lindholm himself isn't the issue, but the offense as a whole is.

With news of the team's slow start in 2024-2025, we only have to look back 25 years ago, to the 2000-2001 season.

The Bruins also started with a 3-4-1 record under Pat Burns, which resulted in Burns being replaced by former Stanley Cup-winning coach, Mike Keenan.

GM Harry Sinden saw fit to get rid of Pat Burns to keep the Bruin's standards of play, and competitiveness in place:

After opening the season 3-0-1, the Bruins have lost four straight games and general manager Harry Sinden decided to fire Burns.

"The team's play over their last several games has convinced me we need to go in a different direction and that a different coach was needed for that to be accomplished," Sinden said. "We believe that the players on this team have the talent to be a contending playoff club, but have not played up to that potential."

They would hire Mike Keenan for the 2000-2001 season, who finished the season with a 33-26-7-8 record.

GM Mike O'Connell would also follow Burns' firing, with Mike Kennan being fired as well:

Keenan reportedly was unpopular with players and the training staff, who objected to his style of motivating through intimidation.

"Though the team made progress, there was not enough progress to warrant extending him another two years," O'Connell said.

Yikes.

What more is there to be said about the dumpster fire 2000-2001 season? Hopefully, we won't see this replicated.

But GM Don Sweeney has quite a few difficult decisions ahead of him, especially with Brad Marchand's extension as well.
