Boston Bruins Head Coach Joe Sacco Issued An Emotional Statement On The Passing Of Former Boston Bruins Legend

Boston Bruins interim head coach Joe Sacco just issued an emotional statement on the passing of former Boston Bruins legend Tom McVie.

Today the Boston Bruins announced that former assistant coach, and longtime ambassador Tom McVie has passed away at the age of 89.

Statement from Boston Bruins president Cam Neely:

«The entire Boston Bruins organization is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tom McVie,» Bruins president Cam Neely said in a statement. «Tom was a huge part of our Bruins family, having served as a coach, scout and ambassador for more than 30 years. His hockey mind, colorful personality, gruff voice, and unmatched sense of humor livened up every room he entered and will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom's family and many loved ones.»

The Boston Bruins hired McVie as an assistant coach during the 1992-93 season, and went on to become a professional scout for the Bruins in 1988. McVie had the professional scout role with the Boston Bruins until he decided to retire from it in the 2019-20 season.

Statement from Bruins interim head coach Joe Sacco:

«On behalf of myself and the Bruins organization, I want to send along our condolences to Tom McVie's family,» interim head coach Joe Sacco said after Boston's 6-3 win over the Sharks. «Tom was a part of the Bruins organization for a long time. And everyone that had the chance to meet him, you'll never forget who he was. He was a great man.»

Tom McVie was the head coach for the New Jersey Devils, Winnipeg Jets, and Washington Capitals before he joined the Boston Bruins organization.

The Bruins legend spent eight decades in the hockey community, and had a lengthy minor hockey league career in the WHL, IHL, and ECHL.

During his minor league career he played for teams like the Seattle Totems, Portland Buckaroos, Phoenix Roadrunners, Los Angeles Blades, and Johnstown Jets.

Even though he never got to play in the NHL, McVie ended up playing 15 season in the WHL, and had multiple championship seasons, his first in 1959 with Seattle, and then again in 1964-65 with Portland.

McVie ended up playing more than 1,100 professional hockey games and would end up scoring a total of 470 goals.
