The 35-year-old winger played for the Bruins last year on a $1 million contract. During his time with the Bruins, he provided secondary scoring along with power play time that became vital for their playoff run. But it appeared that general manager Don Sweeney was willing to look elsewhere as he did not renew Van Riemsdyk.
Standing at six foot 3 and 207 pounds, van Riemsdyk has always played a North South game and would always be plain in front of the net to help tip pucks in past the goaltenders.
With several rookies wanting to make the team for this rookie camp, it's likely Van Riemsdyk may be a safe choice to bring back at either a league minimum $775,000 up to 1,000,000.
The Bruins are currently in a holding pattern as the team continues to negotiate a new long-term deal for Bruins star goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
This will tie up significant resources and prevent Sweeney from looking at other options throughout the NHL. This leads back to the PTO market and a player like van Riemsdyk would have a veteran presence and still have the scoring touch to help the Bruins at least for another season.
Van Riemsdyk played for three NHL organizations including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and the Bruins.
With several PTO candidates being mentioned it would make sense that Sweeney would add van Riemsdyk to his list.
